...PRIME OF Miss JEAN BRODIE, by Muriel Spark (187 pp.; Llppincott; $3.95). Knowledgeable readers of Muriel Spark's novels admire such crystalline structures of malice as Memento Mori and The Ballad oj Peckham Rye partly for the economy with which they are built. Avoiding bravura writing as she would a vulgar display of pound notes, this Scotswoman sits composedly among her characters, goading them by silence and an infrequent equivocal smile to disclose their sins. Rarely does the exposure require more than 200 pages, and at the end of a Muriel Spark novel, most readers find themselves wondering...
...engine is a gas turbine affair-adapted in principle from the turbojet airplane engine-which Chrysler has been working on for years (TIME, March 29, 1954). A compressor forces air into a chamber where it is heated and then mixed with fuel (see diagram). A single spark plug ignites the mixture, and the expanding hot gases drive two turbines. To ease the eye sting in Los Angeles, the nation's smog capital, Detroit last year equipped all new cars to be sold in California with a blow-by device made by General Motors' A.C. Spark Plug Division. G.M.'s blow-by, which is the only one approved so far by California's Air Pollution Control Board, added from $4.50 to $6.50 to the price of the '61s that carried it. Since longer production runs will cut manufacturing costs, the blow-bys used...
...questions about life are asked over and over again. How long can organisms cling to the spark of life? Does life exist elsewhere than on earth? Last week scientists attempted to answer both questions-and thereby raised a scholarly scientific controversy...
