Clairmont isn't alone in her troubles. Another keynote speaker was hospitalized for depression, another lost two of her sons, a third was abandoned by her father. Their burdens differ, but they are all Women of Faith, adherents of an evangelical Christian movement that is rapidly becoming both complement and antidote to the all-male Promise Keepers. And despite the problems, the tenor of the weekend becomes resolutely cheerful. "Joy" is invoked almost as frequently as God. Members of Women of Faith don't trade promises or admonishments; they swap stories and compliments. Since 1996, when the for-profit enterprise...

...lately. First, the facts. Three weeks ago it was announced that nearly two-thirds of teaching candidates had failed a newly required competency exam. In the aftermath of that announcement, politicians had a field day, rushing to judgment on the test-takers and their college teachers. House Speaker Tom Finneran (D-Mattapan) denounced the test-takers as "idiots" and proclaimed college diplomas worth nothing more than a "used Kleenex that's been lying in the gutter." Or even the Second Amendment fundamentalist who believes, as Heston does, that any infringement of the "right...

...cost of more than $4 million, Seven Days' pilot is reputedly the most expensive produced for the new season, twice as pricey as most others. Where's the moolah going? Into the special effects, from computer-generated images of the White House exploding (again) and the bombing of the Speaker's limousine to the design and building of a huge 24-ft.-high, 45-ft.-wide sphere for time travel. The show stars Jonathan LaPaglia, once a real-life emergency-room doctor who turned in his stethoscope for show biz, as Frank Parker, a former CIA renegade who's drafted...
