After losing my voice to throat cancer from smoking cigarettes, I learned to speak again, with much work. When I retired from teaching, I began to visit schools and speak to kids about not smoking. My message was, "Nobody told me, but I'm telling you: Look what tobacco did to me." Then I'd whip open my shirt and show the hole in my neck. That's when I know I'm getting through to them.
