Cease & Desist. Against Russia's attack in the U.N., the U.S. planned another counterpunch. At a special U.N. session this week, U.S. Chief Delegate Henry Cabot Lodge would propose a resolution calling upon Russia and the puppet Kadar government to "desist from repressive measures against the Hungarian people." Nobody had much hope that the resolution would help the Hungarians. What it might do is to keep alive in the world's mind and heart the awareness of Soviet cruelty and treachery. Such a reminder may be necessary when the Russian delegation starts filling the air with denunciations...
With even minor treatment requiring detailed reports, many busy doctors find they can no longer get along with just a receptionist or nurse, are hiring a new kind of medical officeworker-the "insurance secretary." The expense is passed on to the patient (some doctors now charge a special $3 fee for form-filling...
...more than the Des Moines Tribune could stand. The paper (circ. 136,455) stiffly informed readers last week that it was discontinuing the current Mary Worth sequence because it was a "thinly disguised attack on the creator of another comic strip." The railroads were also hard hit by increases in the price of materials and supplies to keep the trains running. A special price index compiled by the Association of American Railroads (based, like the Government's consumer price index, on a 1947-49 base of 100), soared to 143.2 in April, a hike of 6.5% over last year. With interest rates at 5% v. 2% six years ago, the lines must...
...price; Catherine of Aragon had the same problem. The surprising thing is that the standard, oldtime maid of all work has practically disappeared from the U.S. scene. Like everybody else, the modern domestic is a specialist-or at least acts like one. Many maids will not mind children; a special "mother's helper" does that for an extra 50? an hour. Others do not do heavy cleaning (a cleaning woman comes in twice a week), will not climb ladders to wash the outside of windows (an off-duty fireman or cop does it for 50? a window) ; an upstairs...
