The film begins in the soot and bustle of an old European city, with a design scheme both grim and dapper: even the evil blobs who chase Howl wear straw hats. The castle, which treads back roads on four Seussian legs, is a spectacular jumble of ship parts, old wooden houses and gigantic barrels. Palaces and shimmering lakes, warplanes and fire sprites all come to life at the breath of Miyazaki's graphic genius...

Rescued from abandonment by the Italian Environment Foundation (fai), the vertical garden (there's actually no villa) offers one of the most romantic walks in Europe. It winds through luxuriant wooded paths, natural grottoes and ancient ruins, and leads to a spectacular 120-m waterfall. The ugly stench of Yale has forged a path of pheromones to the noses of the Undergraduate Council (UC) who took its cues from our superior athletics program and announced its secession from the Ivy Council. Superiority comes in all shapes and sizes here at Harvard, including in student governance, and we are glad that UC President Matthew J. Glazer ’06 no longer has to mix with the riffraff. Hopefully...
