Died. Waddill Catchings, 88, Wall Street financier and spectacular loser in the 1929 crash; of a kidney infection; in Pompano Beach, Fla. During the market madness of the 1920s, Catchings rose from a clerk to president of investment bankers Goldman, Sachs & Co., sat on the boards of 29 companies, and in 1928 launched Goldman Sachs Trading Corp.-a mutual fund which cost its holders close to $300 million when the price plummeted from $232 to $1.75 per share. The property--Arnold Bennett's novel Buried Alive--made two successful movies, and there seemed no reason why it couldn't sustain a successful musical too. But Nunnally Johnson, who did the screenplay to the 1943 movie Holy Matrimony, has merely tightened his script a little and introduced a few new scenes in converting it to musical comedy.
