...what the church means by a mea culpa," says TIME religion correspondent David Van Biema. "His belief that the church strengthens itself through a frank acknowledgment of past sins is a remarkable thing. But the Vatican is also being careful to make clear that this isn't simply a spectacular act of self-flagellation before hostile outsiders; it's about the church's need to express regret and ask for God's pardon rather than to satisfy outsiders...
...Homer chucks it into the trash. Which is how I feel about the awards right now. I suppose I'm expected to say something about them, this being the music column and all, except that I feel award shows naturally tend to reward the middlebrow rather than the spectacular. (Hello, Santana!) And the behind-the-scenes politics of major labels to win Grammys just leaves an odd taste in my mouth. Liz Smith is a total idiot...

But her most spectacular piece, "Ambivalent Passages III," seems to defy this straight sanguine categorization. The layers of cheesecloth, beeswax, shellac, oil bar, paint and rice paper that Boutelle uses in her art are here transformed into a composition reminiscent of Gustav Klimt's "Water Serpents," mermaids entangled in algae and veins, now in vivid carmine...
...long ago, things weren't looking that good for the Crimson. A spectacular weekend against Yale and Princeton, along with a possible weekend sweep, has given Harvard the kind of momentum that Bill Bradley can only pray...
