Among the more important results of the investigations of the past year is the discovery of two new variables, three stars having peculiar spectra and the presence of hydrogen lines in the spectrum of V. Andromeda. The discovery of the variability of light of Eros has added greatly to the value of the early Photographs of that body. Photographs of the spectrum of lightning were obtained last summer for the first time. It is expected that the discovery will open a new field for spectroscopic work...
...have not as yet been carefully examined their development shows them to have been fairly successful. The Observatory succeeded in getting several photographs of the Leonids' trails and by the use of them will probably be able to locate the radiant. Two plates seem to show photographs of the spectra of the Leonids. This is an unusual success, as it is very difficult to photograph the spectrum of a falling body. It cannot be stated positively that photographs of spectra have been obtained until a more careful examination has been made...
...months of July and September shows the curious fact that the spectrum of lightning is not always the same. The spectrum of the flash closely resembles that of the new star, the Nova Persei. The apparatus was the same as is used in obtaining photographs of the spectra of stars and the success of the experiment, it is expected, will open a new field for spectroscopic work...
...some cases they were blue and red. The trial of one unusually large one was visible for fifteen minutes. About three dozen photographs were taken and at least one Leonid was photographed. The remaining plates and those of the camera used in the apparatus for determining the spectra of the Leonids have not yet been developed. The shower was not as large as that of two years ago when about 800 Leonids were counted, but is considerably larger than last year's shower...
...most important of these is in regard to the question of the nature of the atmosphere of the sun. The experiment was performed by Professor Trowbridge and consisted in a careful study of the effect of powerful discharges of electricity on the spectra of various gases. Although great care was taken in drying and pur fying these gases, it was found that hydrogen, nitrogen and rarefied air gave substantially the same spectrum under the same conditions and as a result of the powerful electrical discharges the aqueous vapor was released from the walls of the spectrum tubes. From this investigation...
