...ratings, RCA completely dominates the color-television field, is increasing its manufacturing capacity so that by the end of this year sales of color sets are expected to be triple those of 1965. After a shaky start, the corporation is also moving ahead with its Spectra 70 computers. For the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, RCA built the TIROS weather satellite, contributed to the Gemini flights, is now concentrating on components for the Apollo program. For national defense, the corporation was a major supplier of electronic control equipment used by the Minuteman missile program. It has also branched into...
Unlike the spectra of other quasars, which demonstrate one red shift in their emission lines and sometimes another in their absorption lines (caused by the passage of their light through cooler matter on the way to the observer), the spectrum of 0237-23 displays three red shifts. In addition to the expected shift of its emission lines, Astronomers Greenstein and Maarten Schmidt (TIME cover, March 11, 1966) have found its absorption lines have two distinctly different and lower red shifts. Astronomer Greenstein believes that they are caused by light from the central body passing through two shells of gas rapidly...
Bright Core. There are other unusual features of 0237-23. The spectra of most quasars show the presence of only lighter elements, such as hydrogen, helium and silicon. The spectrum of 0237-23 shows that the expanding gas shells contain titanium and probably chromium, nickel, cobalt and iron-heavy elements never before detected in quasars...
...Your story on quasi-stellar sources is well researched. It may not be amiss to note that while Schmidt has concentrated on the spectra of QSS, others have contributed more importantly to their identification and photometry...
...contained no color, only shadings of black and white, and were one-third of an inch long and a thousandth of an inch thick. Under the microscope, however, Sandage and Greenstein were barely able to discern strange patterns and spectral lines that had never before been observed in stellar spectra. Genuinely puzzled, Greenstein began to work out an elaborate hypothesis suggesting that the quasars were extremely dense and hot nearby objects, probably the remnants of supernovas containing highly excited or unfamiliar elements...
