MUMBAI, India - In the days after the Indian elections on May 16, until the finance minister’s speech on July 6, the nation discussed only one subject: the budget of the incoming government. The Congress Party, reelected to power after holding office for the past five years, had won a large enough majority of parliamentary seats to create a governing coalition free of leftists—like members of the Communist Party—who had slowed market reforms in the past. The new government, more moderate and centrist in composition than in its past term, won such...

...producing health-care reform, but it's great at creating catchy new lingo. Getting "Borked." "Hanging chads." "Lipsticks on pit bulls." The latest is "wise Latina," two words that have been repeated ad nauseam since the middle of May, when conservatives started flogging the text of a 2001 speech given by Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor at the University of California, Berkeley. ...sure, the idea of a "wise Latina" is a new one to a lot of people. Before the Sotomayor speech was made available, finding the words wise Latina in articles of any sort was exceedingly rare. Latinas are frequently described as "fiery" or "caliente" or "curvy" - but rarely "wise." A cursory Nexis search reveals only a single book review, from 2000, of a sci-fi tome called The Fresco, in which a heroine who communes with aliens is described as the daughter of "a wise Latina lady and her salvage-yard husband." Clearly a page turner. (See Sonya Sotomayor...

...Street's Jeremy Ben-Ami at the White House meeting was one more change to digest for such stalwarts of the Jewish-American establishment as Foxman and Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. Following the President's Cairo outreach speech in June, Hoenlein had said publicly that "President Obama's strongest supporters among Jewish leaders are deeply troubled by his recent Middle East initiatives, and some are questioning what he really believes...

...little-noted speech in London on July 11, European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana - a key figure in the "Quartet" of the U.S., E.U., U.N. and Russia that is overseeing the peace process - said that if the parties were unable to bring the conflict to an end in the very near future, the international community would have to impose a solution. "The mediator has to set the timetable too," Solana said. "If the parties are not able to stick to it, then a solution backed by the international community should be put on the table...
