Earthquakes alter planetary speed in two ways. Shifting plates rearrange the distribution of the Earth's mass, causing it to bulge imperceptibly in spots it didn't bulge before and contract in others. That rearrangement should further shift the Earth's inclination, or figure axis (the axis around which the Earth's mass is balanced, which is slightly different from the north-south axis around which the Earth rotates) - in the case of the Chile earthquake, by about three inches. The law of conservation of angular momentum, however, requires that even under these exigent circumstances, the Earth's angular momentum...
...spent much of the past two weeks seeing the angular-momentum principle in action - at least if you watched the Olympics. Earthquakes change the Earth's rotation the same way a twirling figure skater changes hers - by extending or tucking her arms in, for instance, to slow down or speed up accordingly. The only difference is that the skater does so decidedly more elegantly...
...some of the album’s more memorable lyrics, driven by upbeat but repetitive guitar chords, are found here. On “Falling In,” frontman Jason Wade sings, “Every time I see your face / My heart takes off on a high speed chase,” and promises, “I would never do you wrong / Or let you down or lead you on.” “Halfway Gone” takes up a similarly melodramatic theme, Wade singing, “Talk, talk is cheap / Give...
...mountain, and malfunctioning ice machines, seems silly. We'll remember the likes of Joannie Rochette, the Canadian figure skater who displayed genuine bravery while toe-looping and triple-axling two days after her mother died of a massive heart attack. We'll also feel for Sven Kramer, the Dutch speed skating legend who lost the tortuous 10,000-meter race because he illegally switched lanes, which is like an innocent man going to jail on the smallest technicality. (See pictures of the opening ceremonies...
...shores, let's also appreciate a stunning development: Team U.S.A. kicked a ton of butt. The U.S. topped the medals table, winning 37 in all, the most by any single country in Winter Olympics history. The heavily hyped faces, like snowboarder Shaun White, downhill skier Lindsey Vonn, long-track speed skater Shani Davis, men's figure skater Evan Lysacek, all delivered golds. Apolo Ohno now has eight medals, more than any other U.S. Winter Olympian. Bode Miller, the Torino pariah who came out of retirement to give the Olympics one more go, showed that when expectations are lifted, and extracurricular...
