...Core and General Education—to a new and all-powerful committee, the Standing Committee on General Education (SCGE). There is little reason to believe that the SCGE will not precisely replicate the Core’s incoherence. As the Core’s disintegration demonstrates, failing to spell out details of implementation is a fatal error. The Standing Committee on the Core Program (SCCP), the body responsible for the Core’s original introduction and ongoing administration, has become a bureaucratic roadblock, as demonstrated by its repeated refusal to grant Core exemptions to students who have taken...

...lovers. Argento is one of those severe, strong-featured women who exhales the toxic sexuality of a vixen painted by Goya. Aattou is a luscious, full-lipped, smooth-bodied satyr who could be Argento's prettier, more feminine twin. No wonder Ryno can't shake off Vellini's spell - she is his more volcanic, dominant half. The film may be more seductive than it is plausible, and it's not Breillat's most engaging work (that would be Fat Girl and its funnier remake, Sex Is Comedy). ...people in the Wong-Doyle films (Chungking Express, 2046 and the others) are professional actors, wonderful ones, who find interior life in their characters; Nevins, who's not an actor, doesn't have that skill, for all his photogenicity. The second difference is that those films weave a romantic spell about their dreamy characters, one that puts the audience in the mood for love. ...gears up for its biggest curricular transition in a generation. The approved legislation provides a partial timeline for the implementation of the new program. The committee that administers the Core is slated to be dissolved at the end of the coming academic year—but the legislation does not spell out when the Core itself will cease to exist.Dean of the College Benedict H. Gross ’71 said after yesterday’s meeting that undergraduates studying at Harvard during the transition period, excluding freshmen who enter the College after new requirements have been put in place, will...
