WHATEVER else the Harvard Echo may be, it is at least a legitimate journalistic enterprise, having some title to be called a representative paper. We are sorry that we cannot say as much of the Harvard Register. As long as Mr. Moses King confined himself to his proper sphere, the publication of guide-books, we refrained from making any attack upon him, even when he had the effrontery to put Harvard College on the title-page of his books. But now that he has invited criticism by coming forward as the sole editor of an alleged Harvard paper, we feel...
...sharp work as pitcher, the able support the Frauditor gave him behind the bat, and the fine fielding of Blister. We only have space to give a detailed account of the first inning. At precisely three o'clock the Borsair, gracefully poising himself on one toe, let fly the sphere. Moriarty, for the Hod-lifters, amid cries of the crowd of, "Are you there, Moriarty?" drove a liner back to the Borsair, who neatly caught it - between the eyes; notwithstanding the sudden shock, he deftly hurled the red globe to Cunners, on first base, in time to put Moriarty...
...rule in regard to throwing the hammer does not seem to us quite as it should be: "Letting go of the hammer in an attempt counts as a 'try'." When the "solid iron sphere, weighing sixteen pounds," strikes a spectator in the head, we think it extremely likely that that individual, if able to collect his ideas, would look upon it as a 'throw'. After several spectators in the immediate neighborhood had been carried off prostrated by these 'tries,' the judges might with reason decide that the contestant had done enough for that afternoon, as the spectators seemed not hurt...
...doubled usefulness of the small boy - we beg pardon, the page - at the Library suggests a larger sphere for his brother at the Secretary's office. It is a well-known fact that censure-marks and the like can be removed by depositing in the Dean's box a suitable petition; and yet this simple remedy is seldem adopted. This is caused, not by lack of excuses, for, since the hard times began, physician's certificates have been unusually cheap, but by the natural aversion all students feel towards U. 5. Only the longest experience will enable...
...Yale Courant contains an excellent article on "The Sphere of Criticism." Another, entitled "As Regards Eating," is tolerably amusing, though it gives us rather a startling idea of the company Yale men expect to meet at dinner-parties. The Editors of the Courant are disturbed in their minds because what they "considered a harmless joke - to the effect that there were twenty insane persons in the Senior Class - has been copied, in sober earnest, into nearly every college paper, large or small, in the country." The characteristic American amusement of telling untruths which are not meant to be believed...
