...paddle-wheel satellite is designed to make the most of the sun's energy. Its main body will be a 28-in. sphere covered with a thin metal skin. Out of it will protrude four paddlelike surfaces carried on branching supports and arranged in such a way that one of them will always face fairly accurately toward the sun. Both surfaces of the paddles will be covered with a mosaic of cells made of thin sheets of a photoelectric material (probably silicon) that turns sunlight into electricity. The paddles will be folded when the satellite is in the nose...
...leader of an activity is also as much a representative as is the Marshal or the Student Council member, though the sphere of his representation may be smaller. The head of a political club is as involved in representing the member of his activity as the Council member is in representing the student body...
...removal from the politicking sphere maye be salutary at this point, for other leaders will be able to emerge from out of his shadow. With Adenauer in the Presidential office, perhaps the Socialists can gain some strength as an opposition party. To a large extent Russian policy will determine German politics, and in light of Soviet intransigence on free elections for unification, the Socialists are hard pressed to find responsible alternatives to Adenauer's strong Western commitments. An effective opposition is important, however, in teaching the arts of representative government...
...that the atoms have varying shapes. The nuclei of iron atoms are surrounded by a cloud of electrons in almost the classic shape of a globe. But the electrons of nickel and cobalt atoms form cigar-shaped lobes around the nucleus, so that the whole atom looks like a sphere with blisters. Significance of Dr. Freeman's news is that the shapes formed by the electrons may provide an explanation for magnetism, which seems to be caused by "uncoupled" electrons that travel independently as they whirl around the atom's nucleus. It is now up to the theorists...
When Harvard is accused of snobbery, thought immediately focuses on money, clothes, manners, and social status. But with regard to these peripheral considerations, the accusation is probably not well founded. This becomes telling when it is directed toward the intellectual sphere. At Harvard, a wrong conclusion is bad indeed, and the wrong outlook is contemptible. The Harvard student will accept a new idea if he agrees with it; but it commands little attention merely because it is new, or different. The intolerance of this aspect of Harvard's provincialism is demonstrated by the refusal to discuss matters...
