Mall rats beware: the Web isn't ready for you yet. Stores like Sears, Macy's and Home Depot use their sites as little more than corporate advertising. On the other hand, the well-known Spiegel catalog www.spiegel.com has converted to the Web pretty well; its paper and electronic versions actually interact. Of the Web-only stores, NetMarket www.netmarket.com is probably the best of a bad bunch; few sites recognize the importance of a large inventory, extensive product descriptions and fun. At least there's no Muzak...
...even as Spiegel has jumped into the electronic world, other giant retailers have not. Sears, for instance, is taking a more cautious approach. Though it put a catalog of Craftsman tools online last fall, it isn't rushing to build a webstore. Today the Net accounts for less than 5% of the Spiegel catalog's overall sales, but that share has grown fivefold or more in each of the past three years; sales and circulation of Spiegel's catalogs...
Says David Picker, former head of United Artists and a friend of Halmi's: "He's a throwback to the kind of creative producer--Sam Spiegel, David O. Selznick--the cultured, romantic, passionate kind, who won't let go of an idea until it happens." And who wants things the way he wants things. When Assante tried to back out of The Odyssey at one point during the production because he was unhappy about the script, Halmi slapped him with a lawsuit for the entire budget of the film. Assante came back, and Halmi conceded to a reworking...
...surfeit of foreign newspapers one finds in Harvard Square, and few cities, and fewer suburbs, provide much akin to the mind-opening experience of living among foreign students. Harvard graduates its students into fast-paced lives set in remarkably sterile, monolingual places, where finding Le Monde or Der Spiegel proves difficult, and locating other periodicals is impossible...
