...bonus rather than a basic right. For some, this is evidence that the American system is deeply flawed. "It was a scandal that the world's richest country for so long offered its citizens such pitiful protection against illness or injury," wrote Gregor Peter Schmitz, Washington correspondent for Der Spiegel on its website Monday. "It seems entirely possible that, in 10 years time, Americans will find it hard to believe that they didn't always have the right to health insurance...

Johannesson and other wildlife campaigners recommend spraying the park with a chemical that makes shrubs and plants unappetizing to the animals. Tuvuynger, though, has little sympathy for that argument. "If you do that you only move the problem 100 meters away. Overpopulation is not good for the animals' well-being...

...Russian President Dmitri Medvedev has called rampant corruption a threat to national security and made an anti-corruption drive one of the signature campaigns of his presidency. However, even he is realistic about what can be done. In a recent interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel, Medvedev questioned a pledge by Nurgaliyev earlier this year to eradicate corruption in the nation's police forces over the course of a month. "I would hope that the Interior Minister has a clear idea of how to combat corruption," Medvedev said. "This certainly cannot be achieved in one month. I also think...
