...That his movies have amassed billions of dollars in worldwide box-office receipts doesn't make Lucas a great filmmaker. If he wants to prove himself, let him come up with something in addition to spaceships and special effects. Until he does that, I will prefer directors like Steven Spielberg, whose films Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan show how deeply he can engage people's emotions. While I respect Lucas, if he wants to engrave his name in the annals of cinema, he needs to produce something quite different from the children's entertainment he has been making...

Front runner in the summer sweepstakes is War of the Worlds, for which Steven Spielberg has added his patented parent-and-imperiled-child theme to H.G. Wells' alien-invasion novel, memorably filmed in 1953. Tim Burton has imposed his lovable eccentricity on the Roald Dahl children's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with Johnny Depp replacing Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. LUCAS You know, I said three's fine. And then I came up with an idea I thought was brilliant, so I told the other guys [Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford], and they kind of flipped out. It's vaguely in the realm of the supernatural. We have to accept the fact that Indiana Jones is an older man. But it's been hell getting a script out of it. Steven is committed to shooting it next year. I just got the latest script yesterday...

...thought it was safe to spend the summer watching reruns, Martha's Vineyard is launching its first annual Jaws Fest to lure movie buffs to the Massachusetts resort island where the shark tale was filmed. The three-day event in early June will mark the 30th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's first blockbuster with an outdoor screening and appearances by Jaws novelist Peter Benchley and co-screenwriter Carl Gottlieb, along with displays of movie props and behind-the-scenes photographs. (Universal Studios' commemorative DVD set won't be available until later that month.) The reunion won't be complete...
