...stratosphere is changing. Among other things, scientists studying the AO have connected sudden warmings of the stratosphere to outbreaks of wintry weather in Europe and the U.S. Somehow, scientists think, these spikes in stratospheric temperatures weaken the winds that swirl around the Arctic, thereby allowing frigid air to spill out of polar regions and envelop cities like Boston and New York, Berlin and Paris in teeth-chattering cold. Conversely, when stratospheric temperatures cool, strong winds at the surface discourage cold air from dipping so far south. Already, the AO's clear connection to the stratosphere is giving weather forecasters...
That is all good stuff, for now. But over the long haul, a banana-republic dollar could lead to inflation, higher interest rates and a recession likely to spill around the planet. In the past, the strong dollar allowed the U.S. government to borrow cheaply and attract investment in the safest currency on the globe. That helped finance the budget deficit, kept interest rates low and also allowed Americans, as individuals and collectively through their government, to spend way beyond their means. Foreigners are big buyers of mortgage securities, which make purchasing that McMansion more affordable. They hold nearly...
...stage door opens and iconic figures spill into the Soho street: a plump, old-fashioned bobby, who proceeds to direct traffic; a chorus line of chimney sweeps; and finally, a maroon-coated nanny who shivers on the sidewalk and seems in need of a little magic. The nanny isn't quite ready to fly. During TIME's backstage visit a week before the Dec. 15 opening, co-producer...
SLD’s sound isn’t altogether easy to define; there are elements of Built to Spill, U2 (in the soaring guitar riffs), various pop-punk bands, and even 3 Doors Down. That is to say, SLD favor controlled but nonetheless ragged guitar sounds, driving drums (deceptively light at times), simple bass lines and an singer frequently sounding at his wits end. If any of this sounds unappealing, you probably won’t like this album: SLD has identified their sound and hardly stray from it. There is a certain majesty, a more primal musical essence...
...movie’s simple pleasures are easily cancelled out by, quite possibly, the most egregious use of island music in recent cinematic history. As the filmmakers begin to lose any faith in their story, cleavage seems to spill out of every frame. And should there be an appropriate pause for character development, audiences can count on meaningless dialogue to provoke unintended laughs...
