...October, the atmosphere lends itself to the appearance of apparitions-imagined or not. Low clouds scud across the gray Baltic waters. The streets empty out as summer visitors who came for the parties and cheap beer head home. Centuries of sieges, plagues and political intrigues leave a catalogue of spine-chilling tales: screams emanating from the "Maiden's" tower on the edge of the high town where prostitutes in the Middle Ages were once imprisoned; spectral wanderings of a French mercenary who fought for the Danes and skinned his prisoners alive. There is even a 'Ghosts' St., a desolate alleyway...

...Madagascar as an ecotourism destination. Some 70% of Madagascar's animals are found only in this island nation, which is roughly the size of Texas. But Madagascar hasn't always been great at showcasing its biological richness--driving anywhere in this remote country will test your shocks and your spine--and its tourism industry remains small. That's beginning to change, though, as the government is in the middle of tripling the size of its national-park system, and local-guide networks are springing up around the country. While such a thought might send shivers down the spine of the most committed post-colonial literary theorist, this Western-centric ideal should not be a cause of concern. To put putatively “Western” learning, like classical languages, on par with other cultural traditions presents an acute case of internal inconsistency. The idea of a university...

...leads me into a bright room with tropical plants. I strip off my shirt and trousers and lie on a massage table. (Just as I am psyching myself up for the treatment, I see one of the little snakes, with a string of brick-colored diamonds along its spine, open its mouth impossibly wide. Is it going to strike? No--it coughs up a half-digested mouse, leading me to assume that the snake is as queasy about giving me a massage as I am about getting one.) When Barak plops a writhing tangle of snakes on my belly, their...
