Apart from the fact that Kelly looks like he's dying to break into some of his very excellent dancing, and Deanna into a tender encore of the very hummable "Always," "Christmas Holiday" has its tense and effective moments. Gale Sondergaard delivers a spine-tingling performance as the aristocratic matriarch of an old New Orleans family, trying to keep her bad little boy from going around murdering people and otherwise disturbing the Creole peace. Richard Whorf portrays the liquor-loving newspaperman in just the right tones of big-time tenderness...

...when sport was slow. Babe, nipped by a horsefly at the moment a sturgeon took the bait, twitched so violently that the huge fish was sent sailing all the way to Payette Lake. A jerk like that could well have given the creature a curvature of the spine (Slimy Slim is a three-hump serpent). And then Slim developed his periscope neck by nostalgically trying to peer back over the hills toward the scenes of his childhood...

...made so articulate the tremendous collaboration of men and machines which is required to put fighters in position and to keep them there. No film except Tarawa (TIME, March 20) has given keener images of what jungle fighting is like. Attack's images of vast messiness and spine-cracking effort as men move tanks, guns and ammunition from the beach into the jungle's boggy fantasia are even more impressive than the breathtaking shots made from low-flying strafers, or the magnificence of certain moments when the morning mist merges ships, men, surf, jungle into half-glimpsed symbols...
