...Afghan side of the border near the Pakistani town of Chaman, we had pulled into a Taliban base, a dusty courtyard with two broken-down cars. Earlier in the day, a convoy of journalists were stoned and robbed while leaving Spin Boldak, just up the road. Some 200 other journalists had already left for Pakistan. We were waiting for four reporters who had been led off into the Rigestan desert by the Taliban to look at some fuel tankers blown up by U.S. commandos. It didn't seem like a very good idea to leave our friends behind in Afghanistan...
...Forget Kandahar. After the roadblock, they herded us off to a high-walled compound in a place called Spin Boldak. Aside from one foray to a refugee camp whipped by dust storms, they've kept us inside this compound for two days now. The only diversion is watching our Taliban guards tossing stones at the hundreds of Afghans perched on the wall, fascinated by our high-tech equipment and foreign female reporters who aren't hidden in a burqa, an outfit which turns a woman into a pup tent with feet...
That said, I'd recommend that anyone with young kids lean toward the cute and lovable GameCube. Nintendo has mastered that market, and by mid-December should have 20 titles ranging from new twists on old characters--Luigi's Mansion, a Mario spin-off--to Pikmin, the latest from Shigeru Miyamoto, the genius behind the Zelda franchise.
