...Platinum Spinner. One hit LP has made Peter Frampton, 26, a multimillionaire in a mere 18 months. Frampton Comes Alive! has sold 11 million copies, earning the transplanted British rock star $6.4 million; in addition, he grossed $3.5 million in S.R.O. concerts across the U.S. last year. It took the wispy (5 ft. 7 in., 120 lbs.) guitarist ten hard years of experimentation and road tours before he hit platinum. Says he: "I would never have believed 18 months ago that I'd be driving around in limos, own a Rolls and live this...
...revival. Ballantine Books has reprinted in paperback 100,000 copies each of so-so Sabatini (The Black Swan, Captain Blood Returns, Mistress Wilding). Three examples of super-Sabatini (The Sea Hawk, Scaramouche, Bellarion) are to follow. Quickly, one hopes. At his worst Sabatini is a hypnotic yarn spinner. Sports editor and columnist at the New York Daily News from 1924 to 1936, Gallico pioneered what is now known as the Plimpton Ploy: swimming against Johnny Weissmuller, boxing a round with Jack Dempsey ("I knew all there was to know about being hit"). Gallico quit the News in 1936 and wrote Farewell to Sport, the first of 41 books, many of them bestsellers. Among his most popular novels: The Snow Goose (1941), Mrs. 'Arris Goes to Paris (1958), The Poseidon Adventure...
Like nearly all of its predecessors, Wizard has a set of features, switched by a series of roll-overs, that mean the difference between assured victory and inevitable defeat: Thumper Bumper, Center Target, Double Bonus and Spinner. But to send a ball rolling over the roll-overs, at the upper right of the machine, is not enough to trigger the features--first, a set of flags associated with the roll-overs must themselves be triggered, by a set of targets spread across the surface of the machine...
...Center Target target, are the appropriate flags flipped and roll-overs activated. And only then can the roll-overs activate their respective functions. The relationships of the many elements of the pinball surface have taken on an immeasurable new dimension here--the thumper bumper, the spinner on Wizard are features that are not once, but twice removed from the targets that give them value...
