Pause.... It's Pinter at his best. Now showing at Adams Pool Theater, a capable production of The Birthday Party features splendid acting and, of course, the perennial treat of Pinterian dialogue. The show succeeds in being entertaining and often engrossing--when it doesn't attempt to put a spin on the mystery of the characters' motivations. But when director Schevey fiddles too much with the sense of the unreal intrinsic to Pinter's works, things tend to go awry...

...relief went up in the press room. Sadly, however, the panel was made up of those real people we hear so much about, and real people apparently don't take their lead from the media. They were still looking for the beef, and didn't know the new spin was, "Where's the mud?" Like jurors who take their responsibility seriously, they were unwilling to pick up on Dole's three early forays into scandal land, even at the cost of forgoing 30 seconds of sound-bite fame...

...Dole advisers how many appearances their man will actually be making in California, and they hedge. That has led to suspicions that even this new strategy is partly just spin, intended to sustain the fading notion that his campaign has somewhere to go. But the Dole campaign, which claims to have a little less than $20 million in its national treasure chest, is promising to spend a third of it on California television buys. Dole ads are disappearing in some other states, like Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Maybe the money really is heading west...
