Given the cost, it's no wonder those who succeed attain hero status among their peers. The veterans love to spin dramatic yarns about an 83-year-old barrel racer who competed while legally blind, a one-armed calf roper, and a 66-year-old bronco rider who managed to beat a group of 20-year-olds. Pride motivates the tales, especially because the current crop of rodeo seniors considers itself the last generation to hone its skills by working on ranches rather than at specialized roping schools or college rodeos. "So many people get older and begin to shut...

...this so? Because former President George H.W. Bush halted the ground campaign at 100 hours, days before our forces could have completely enveloped the Iraqi Republican Guard. And why did he do this? Because 100 hours is a nice round number. The government succeeded in putting a media spin on even its war tactics. The media also devoted much coverage to the “Highway of Death,” and graphically showed the American public the scale of the carnage our forces delivered to the Iraqis. And yet the Republican Guard escaped virtually unscathed because former President Bush...

Branch has obviously benefited greatly from the adroit producing hands of Jeff Shanks, who straps Branch’s voice and guitar centre stage, underscoring with hip-hop beats, richly textured orchestrations and densely ethereal atmospherics. Shanks gives a decidedly varied spin to jangle/folk-rock, but does almost too much; throughout, you wish he’d get out of the way and just let the kid sing. It’s a testament to Branch’s musical poise that she doesn’t get lost in the over-zealous mix. That said, the pairing of rolling acoustic...

...didn't say that, like Barry Goldwater, he knows he's right. The recount may yet go forward in a race in which the margin of error has vastly exceeded the razor-thin margin of victory. Lieberman faults the media as much as George W. Bush's spin machine for the hole his side finds itself in. And he has a point. At first I thought the media's desire to come to a conclusion whether or not they came to the truth was partly the result of dirty laundry, unrefundable airline tickets and weekends spent doubled up in scarce...

...robberies gone bad) of a Pakistani-born Muslim in Texas, an Indian Sikh in Arizona, and an Egyptian Christian in California are part of a crusade that is already spilling out of the hands of its would-be commander- in-chief. The terror of those who hate us can spin into the terror of those who love us, and in both cases we, understood in any but the meanest and most exclusionary of manners, are at a loss. The United States has promoted itself as a nation of immigrants, and yet immigration continues to arouse fervid reactions against it. Accordingly...
