This seems like meager stuff to spin out to book length, and indeed readers who like excitement, suspense, significance, and action will be disappointed. Author Williams' gifts lie in other directions. Her words flow with the great simplicity of someone unaware of an audience, or indifferent to its presence. Her mind remembers those shaded places where life beats at a cooler pulse, and she summons with utter fidelity the simple people who live in the shade. Powder Man is a small triumph, and a kind of spell...
...left one. Over the intercom to ground control crackled Cotton's voice: "Midair, mid-air"-Air Force shorthand for collision. Then, sounding almost laconic, Cotton radioed guidance to the stricken ship's two-man crew: "O.K., it looks like your tail is gone . . . You'll probably spin." And as the B70 did wind into a flat spin: "Bail out." Then: "One capsule has ejected, I don't know which one." Seconds later: "It's the left capsule...
Right Prize. Ferkauf likes to say that "problems are potentials," and suggests that Korvette's will be solved by Bassine and himself. For his part, Bassine denies rumors that he will spin off Korvette's supermarkets, declaring that, "If we marry the lady, we sure enough are going to go with her children." His terms are tough. He insists on getting the title and powers of chief executive officer. In the past, Ferkauf has refused to let anyone have all that. Now he says that Bassine can be the big boss in the office, while Ferkauf himself returns...
Jose Gonzales will play Sam Bussey, a two-handed top-spin player, in the fifth match. Gonzales, who has a strong net game and a good overhead, bowed to Bussey in the number three freshman match last year, 6-3, 6-3. Dick Appleby faces Tiger Clint Belser in the crucial sixth match, which looks like a toss...
...niobium, a metal that becomes a superconductor and shows no resistance to electric current when cooled to extremely low temperatures. The sphere will be placed inside an evacuated quartz shell, also coated with niobium, and suspended in an electrostatic field. Suspending it in this manner will allow it to spin in a near-perfect vacuum without touching anything; it will be free from all friction. The gyroscope container will be kept in a bath of liquid helium at a temperature of-452°F. to make the niobium coating superconducting. In this supercooled state it will shield the gyroscope from...
