Moone's overwhelming sense of release and deliverance is undimmed by the wrinkled skin of the elderly spinster who claims him. Seconds later, however, fate cruelly dashes Moone's hopes: overcome with emotion, the doddering septuagenarian suffers a heart attack and croaks on the spot. Back up the steps heads Moone, but Lady Luck once again intercedes on his behalf. Another woman steps forward to take Moone home with...

Goin' South's script, set just after the Civil War, is essentially an extended two-character sketch. The other role is Julia Tate (Mary Steenburgen), a frigid young spinster whose odd habits include hanging up chairs on wall hooks. Julia weds Moon in a marriage of convenience: she needs someone to work her unsuccessful gold mine, while he needs a respectable wife to shield him from the law. The thin story traces the predictable warming up of their relationship. Pretty soon the film becomes a string of uneven set pieces, the best of which suggest Nichols...

World War I virtually wiped out a generation of British males. On location for a television remake of Broadway's 1940 success, The Corn Is Green, Hepburn is cast as the indefatigable Miss Moffat, a sturdy spinster who moves to a Welsh mining town and opens a school. The man in the director's chair is close friend George Cukor, 79, the grand old master who guided Hepburn through nine previous films. For the crew it's an ideal summer frolic amidst flint hedges and yellow...

...performances of the supporting characters, however, provide the sparkle to the show. Ed Redlich shines as the brash American detective, William Blore. Redlich exploits beautifully the gluttony, thickheadedness and grating bluntness of Blore--a hilarious character. Equally good is Louisa Jerauld as the religion-obsessed, sexually repressed spinster Miss Brent. Jerauld's quivering voice and slow, shuffling walk suggest the righteous, moralizing old maid. David Rieffel, as the gentle, retired General John MacKenzie, also portrays his character sensitively, especially in his frightening monologue to Vera...
