Such a loosely defined prohibition can only stiffle the spirit of free inquiry and discussion; it can only lead to fear and hesitancy in the academic community. This is not to say that professors and others should not take care to support only groups that work for what they believe in. The "loyalty oath" provision, however, must not be allowed to interfere with the right to believe and to teach, freely and honestly...

...Nice a Guy? The only big reservation about Christian Herter voiced last week by men who know him was a lingering doubt whether he has enough of the toughness of mind and spirit that Dulles had in abundance, and that Dulles' successor will urgently need amid the risks and challenges of the cold war. The adjectives that people who know him apply to Christian Herter are words of praise-gentlemanly, kind, courteous-but they do not necessarily imply the essential qualities needed in a Secretary of State in 1959-60. Nor do Herter's own "watchwords," picked...

...with great difficulty to anything approaching the sublime. After all, though a tinkle-tinkle here and there in a Webern score may satiate one's thirst for the piquant and highly flavored, it does not quench the far more important thirst of the soul. Elevated feeling in the human spirit is generally ignored by modern composers, but it is an important response to the musical art. Any thinking person who made a list of the ten greatest compositions would have to include some exalted music--like the Sanctus of Bach's B Minor Mass, or Mozart's Magic Flute...
