...advice is just never heeded. Last week, it was announced that the Class of 2001 will be warned against the purchase and use of halogen lamps in spite of the fact that no suitable alternative has been suggested by the administration. Dean of Freshmen Elizabeth Studley Nathans, refusing to outright ban the lights, wrote in an e-mail message, "We will tell entering students that halogen floor lamps pose a potential fire hazard and that students need to use incandescent or fluorescent lamps in freshman dormitories...
...loop. Each department and professor can independently decide which bookstore to go through. Most choose the Coop because they have both a commitment and the facilities to provide the 1,000 Bibles, of which another bookstore could be wary. But there is no monopoly in spite of appearances. Falwell vilified AIDS victims and had no sympathy for them. Larry Flynt was not motivated by the arguments for free expression put before the court. His impetus was not heroic, but spiteful...
Blacks have come to expect the support of liberal Jews, who find in the black American experience parallels to their own. In spite of this mis-identification, Jews might still have common cause with blacks if blacks responded to their overtures in kind. However, the cultural animosity exuded by black communities, such as those in Crown Heights and those supporting Louis Farrakhan, pose obstacles to this alliance...
