From comparison of these reports, it will be seen that the total amounts of receipts and expenditures of both crews are almost identical, in spite of the fact that our expenses at New London were increased some $200 over '86, owing to the postponement of the race. Again, acting under the advice of the captain of the University crew, we employed the services of Col. Bancroft through the fall. This was at an additional expense of $175. In order to meet this increased expenditure, we economised by buying a second-hand shell of the class of '84, and used every...
...find it necessary to be so vehement in our condemnation of wrong doing, since we should not feel so much secret sympathy with it. Even now, who of us in his heart would not be a rake rather than a hunchback, a villain rather than a fool? In spite of all the moralists, we cannot admire desert or merit as much as the gifts of nature and fortune. And he not only writes a theme on the subject, but afterwards, in a fit of petty spite, bawls out his grief in a newspaper. We express no opinion as to the taste displayed, but we do hope that, after his sophomore year, he will regret this public attack on a deservedly popular instructor, where private redress, for his supposed wrong, might have been so readily obtained...
