Yet doctors have long been puzzled by the fact that such infections, relatively common in children whose spleens have been removed in the treatment of cancer or blood disease, seldom show up in youngsters whose spleens have ruptured and then been removed...
Researchers have long been frustrated by their inability to get cancer cells from patients' tumors to grow rapidly in culture. But the Arizona team, led by Dr. Sydney Salmon and Cell Biologist Anne Hamburger, discovered three years ago that by "conditioning" culture medium with spleen cells taken from mice prone to cancer, they can grow tumor cells from people with common forms of cancer. (The mouse cells apparently produce some yet unidentified factor that supports the growth of certain human cancer cells.) According to Salmon, the cancer cells that thrive and form colonies in the laboratory's plastic...

His son, who has been exposed to PBB since he was an infant and has abnormally high levels of the chemical in his body, has an enlarged liver and spleen. The doctor who examined him thought the condition may have been due to the PBB, but knowledge of PBB's effects is so sketchy that no one can directly tie any one ailment to consumption of the chemical...
