...Geneva is still a splendid place in which to discuss the world's ills. The best lakeside restaurants, like La Perle du Lac or the Lion d'Or, serve a magret de canard with a fine bottle from neighboring Burgundy for about $40. Geneva also has good Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and Indian restaurants, not to mention modest brasseries that offer a delicious newly caught perch for about $10. Any American who wants to take advantage of the strong dollar (now worth 2.8 Swiss francs, up from 1.7 five years ago) will find the Rue du Rhone lined with windows displaying...
There are splendid things in the Met's show: nobody could say that rooms holding Caravaggio's Uffizi Bacchus or the London Supper at Emmaus or the Thyssen Saint Catherine are underoxygenated. Moreover, the Met has done some good to scholarship by setting Caravaggio against what was painted in Italy, and especially in Rome, when he was alive. Madonna...
...that language too. She used to sit on the Truman Balcony of the White House and look at the monument as the sun went down and the swallows swooped around it. Almost every minute, she told friends, the light changed, shifting from pinks to the final deep purple, a splendid spectacle that would have held George Washington in its spell. Her husband, who was rarely humbled, used to fall silent when his helicopter came close in beside the monument on its approach to the White House South Lawn. From the window of the presidential helicopter, the stone expanse seems...
...prep schools. Currier House has a lot of Black students. Kirkland House is great for intramural football and less-than-hot for average GPA; Lowell House is great for Phi Beta Kappa membership and less-than-hot for parties. Adams House's Westmorcty Court and Senior House are splendid and supremely spacious places to live; Mather's low-rise--at least this year--is not. Living at the Quad and having to take a bus to classes is a pain...
