...about it at all, the two parties take different approaches to closing the income gap. Obama in particular has been explicit about wanting to shift more of the income-tax burden away from the middle class and onto those making more than $200,000 a year, while McCain has spoken mainly about creating better job-retraining programs for those displaced by globalization. Another potential path, although it hasn't been a theme in the campaign so far, would be a big effort to repair the country's crumbling infrastructure - which would create lots of jobs that couldn't be outsourced...
...best is Milton's unsurpassed technical command of English: the double contrast of "heels ... fettered" against "fist ... free"; the long vowel in "heels" echoed by "free"; the alliteration of "fettered ... fist ? free"; the combination of all three effects in the verse-ending stressed monosyllable "free," so ironically spoken by a blind slave in chains, but also so irresistibly open-voweled, defiant and exhilarating. In some ways, "free" is the single word that sums up what's most appealing about Milton's politics - his resistance to tyranny, his commitment to liberty. But of course the whole sentence is a threat...
...loyalties to the Bush Administration after the invasion of Iraq, when it briefly seemed as if American military power would transform the region. Now he seems ready to turn again. Sitting in his garden terrace with a few family members and loyal retainers, Jumblatt said that he has spoken with the U.S. embassy to deliver his grim assessment. "The U.S. has failed in Lebanon," he said. "We have to wait and see the new rules which Hizballah, Syria and Iran will set. They can do what they want...
...only time Qahtani has spoken publicly, following a military legal review of his case in 2006, he made clear that all of his statements concerning himself or others were obtained by torture, or the threat of torture. Other prisoners at Guantanamo have made similar claims. But in an apparent attempt to elicit compromising information from them that would not be tainted by torture, the government has requestioned many of them using less coercive techniques, supposedly making their new statements admissible in court. Unlike those prisoners, however, Qahtani's lawyers say he has not been requestioned. The U.S. has also admitted...
...tantamount to George W. Bush's third. The trouble is, there isn't a great deal of hard evidence for this proposition. McCain supports Bush's war in Iraq (though he criticized its execution) and Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy (though he previously opposed them). He has spoken passionately against Bush's policy on torture, and condemned the record-breaking growth in government spending that has taken place on Bush's watch. But that fiscal restraint also limits McCain's policy options, which may be why his approaches to health care and the economy don't differ...
