...baby was born with a stainless-steel spoon in its mouth. It is still there, full of creamed corn, held by Mom, who is plump and pretty. Dad stands slight ly to the rear, a large drink held confidently against an incipient paunch. As gathered by the lens of Bill Owens' cam era, the scene is a family portrait abounding in casual miracles...
High Costs. Most important to the new users is coke's current status as an "in" drug. "It's the height of fashion," says a well-heeled snow freak, "because it shows success." A "spoon" (usually half a gram) of cocaine costs between $25 and $50, and lasts an ordinary user just one evening. Heavy snorters spend several hundred a week. Manic as Samaras' "transformations" are, they still possess a system and a history; his subverted objects have a common ancestor in Meret Oppenheim's surrealist icon of 1936, the fur-covered cup, saucer and spoon. Britain's Mothercare, Ltd., started in 1961 by Chairman Selim Zilkha, runs a unique chain of one-stop, self-service supermarkets that sell maternity wares and everything that a baby needs from cradle through kindergarten. Zilkha's 143 shops spread across England to Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He is opening two more stores this month and plans another 120 shops in Britain. Zilkha, whose ambition is to become the global king...
...spars, oak for her ribs. He poured the lead for her keel in two old iron bathtubs. One of his brothers made her trapezoidal, gaff-headed sails (no newfangled spinnakers for Kathi A nne). A brother-in-law made her goosenecks, blocks and deadeyes (no modernistic turnbuckles). Spoon-bowed Kathi Anne plowed a fast furrow in the races at Lunenburg Harbor...
