...contributors and Mr. Broun himself are talking beside the point. We doubt whether the good sport can be defined--at any rate it is not his action after the contest that counts. If a team plays the game as well and as hard as it can good sportsmanship will take care of itself. Our idea of a good sport is best represented by the eleven which shows that it can play better football than any other eleven--not one which has a reputation for chivalrously cheering its vanquishers. We would say that the Harvard baseball team which today plays Yale...
...species is really extremely democratic. They are masters of the "five-dollar party," can wear their clothes unpressed for a week without suffering social ostracism, can hold their heads high in a Ford, and bathe regularly in the buoyant waters of classroom erudition. Moreover, their sportsmanship cannot be questioned. During the past football season, I say them give sincere applause to the vain efforts of Centre's gridiron warriors, and remain uncovered during the singing of "My Old Kentucky Home...
Harvard defeated Oglethorpe 5-2 in their battle at Ponce de Leon Park yesterday afternoon, but it did something else. "It was a great game," said Percy Haughton; "one of the best I ever saw in the Stadium." The Southerners left behind them a reputation for clean play and sportsmanship that earned them a lasting welcome at Harvard. Now the wearers of the White and Gold again invade a northern field of sport; they bring a winning combination, a veteran team. This is the first year that Harvard--under the guidance of Coach Wachter--has accorded basketball the status...
...need for both sportsmanship and hard work were brought out by Dr. Howe, who spoke at some length. He said work on crew, however, must not interfere with work on studies, for a man on probation, no matter how good he is, is useless to the crew. In outlining the plans for the spring he said that the crews would be picked early and kept together as much as possible, but that this fact should not discourage anyone, because some of the men on the upper crews were almost sure to have to drop out on account of strains, sickness...
