...world under unforgiving scrutiny, Jimmy Carter is, remarkably, harder to figure out now than he was in 1973 when, as Governor of Georgia, he appeared as the mystery guest on the television show What's My Line? and stumped the panel. Though he lives in the spotlight, Carter remains an intensely private person. His hobbies are those of a loner-fishing by himself for hours on end in a Georgia pond or a Pennsylvania trout stream, or jogging through the woods of Camp David, to which he and Rosalynn now retreat almost weekly. Except for Charles Kirbo, the Atlanta...

...Fledermaus was an operatic double play: the first time Queen Coloraturas Beverly Sills, 51, and Joan Sutherland, 53, have appeared onstage together, and the last time Sills will appear in a full-length opera. Of course, few would have considered asking two divas to, Mozart forbid, share the same spotlight. ...show's opening minutes were promising. Striding into the spotlight with guitar in hand, Iah offered "When the Party's Over," one of her best up-beat songs. Next, her three-piece band joined her for a tastefully-rendered, diverse selection of tunes, including the brooding "From Me to You" and the breezy, samba-tinged "I Would Like to Dance." When Ian again took a solo spot for the plaintive "Jesse," the pacing and atmosphere of her concert couldn't have been better...

Unfortunately, Ian was intent on proving that even "sensitive" songwriters can rock and roll, and ran through several tepid compositions from her last LP, Night Rains. Worse, Ian turned over the spotlight several times to her guitarist, Scott Zito, whose cliched rock star showboating was difficult to endure. Ian went through a ficult to endure. Ian went through a few of the motions herself, essaying an awkward leap or two in her high heels...
