Herbert Livingston Satterlee's intimate portrait replaces the spotlight with genteel daylight. A Manhattan lawyer now growing venerable, Satterlee knew the Morgans when they were neighbors of the Satterlee family at Highland Falls on the Hudson in the '80s and '90s. He married Louisa Morgan, the eldest daughter, in 1900, and was a close friend and business aide of his father-in-law until his death in Rome in March 1913. Satterlee's 583-page book, now published after 26 years, is astonishingly complete, high-minded, reverent, and occasionally ingenuous or supercilious enough to transfix...
Whatever the opening night of "Too Late To Laugh" proved about the merits of the Dramatic Club's new production, it did spotlight the slow strangling of education in dramatics by unreasonable labor union restrictions. Prevented from procuring a Boston theatre, the Club was compelled to use Sanders, where, as critics almost universally pointed out, the effectiveness of the play was marred by inadequate facilities...
...melee, individual efforts arose into the spotlight because of their sheer quality. Vinton Freedley, Jr.'s dialogue, when not under the Coward influence, packed punches a-plenty. His characters tended to be typed, good, bad, rich, poor, though sometimes they rise above it and become people. John Holabird's sets, especially Mona's apartment, bear all the earmarks of something bound for Broadway. The Newberry-Rollins music (there should have been more of it!) fitted in beautifully with the Profit dance effects, and the two combined produced some of the high sports in the show...

But between towering Soprano Flagstad and the booming orchestra led by Flagstad's private accompanist, Edwin McArthur, Martinelli's long song of love was pretty well drowned out. To cap all, just before the final curtain Soprano Flagstad took the whole spotlight, and Martinelli had to get up out of his deathbed to go and die on the other side of the stage...
