...much I can say. Statements like, "Well, that George Hughes is pretty good, and his brother's not bad either," or "Late season collapses are one thing, but Harvard is ridiculous," although true, won't really tell you why the team wins or loses. I can spout some Truth after seeing one contest (the 6-5 overtime loss to RPI), but it's not fair to judge anyone on the basis of what he does in decrepit Troy, N.Y., where Zamboni-watching is more exciting than the nightlife...
...smaller, though still giant, company? One reason may have been the grind of ITT. Geneen drove his executives at a frenzied pace; in Brussels, Bergerac worked about 80 hours a week. Geneen also conducted marathon monthly meetings that sometimes lasted for four days, at which subordinates were expected to spout reams of figures on cue and might be publicly humiliated by the boss if they could not do it. Associates remember Bergerac as always smiling and calm in this pressure cooker, but they cannot imagine that he enjoyed...
...with the Loaf of Bread-and Thou, substitute Bag (for the Jug, that is). Instead of bottling their vintages in conventional glass, nearly two dozen California wine makers, including Almaden and Geyser Peak, are putting up bulk wines in four-ply plastic film bags equipped with patented on-off spout valves. Sometimes cunningly encased in cardboard kegs, the bags are cheaper than bottles, as well as easier to ship and store. The pioneering Scholle Corp. of Northlake, Ill., which claims that its bags keep wine safely for nine months, is already unable to meet demand. But do not throw away...
Frank Collin, 33, is a swaggering bullyboy who likes to dress up in a Nazi uniform, spout totalitarian dogma and howl racial slurs. Aryeh Neier, 41, the son of Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany, runs the American Civil Liberties Union, an organization that protects individual freedoms. For the past 14 months, Neier and the A.C.L.U. have defended the right of Collin and a small band of brownshirts to taunt the citizens of Skokie, Ill., thousands of whom are survivors of Nazi death camps...
...hasn't learned from his mistakes. I would have expected Emmerich, along with others who spout phrases coined by Science for the People (e.g., "vulgar Darwinism"), to be disturbed by DeVore's lecture, for it incidentally contradicted many of the things he claimed in his review of Dawkins's book on sociobiology last year (11 April 1977). That review led to a cascade of criticism, most of which asserted that he didn't know what he was talking about (26 April). Emmerich seems determined to prove his critics correct, and to force sociobiology into the "deeply conservative politics" mold whether...
