...MATERIAL Sometimes keeping an enemy down but not out is good enough. The Southwest Research Institute in Texas has created a sprayable antitraction gel for the Marines that is so slippery it is impossible to drive or even walk on it; one researcher describes it as "liquid ball bearings." Spray the stuff on a door handle, and it becomes too slippery to turn. The antitraction gel is mostly water, so it dries up in about 12 hours. It is also nontoxic and biodegradable...

...SPRAY When it comes to fighting off mosquitoes, it doesn't pay to be meek. DEET, the pesticide found in commercial bug sprays, is far more effective at preventing mosquito bites--for up to five hours--than are milder alternatives, including citronella and Skin-So-Soft, which fend off the critters for only 20 minutes. Shower stalls are particularly suspect. Some doctors believe that mycobacteria from the pipes are becoming aerosolized in water spray. The more enclosed a shower stall, the greater the buildup of germ-infested spray. (A variant of the illness--sometimes called hot-tub lung--occurs when people develop an allergic reaction to the mycobacteria in indoor hot tubs.) Making matters worse, says Dr. Michael Iseman of National Jewish, "we have changed the way we treat our water." Since the 1970s, the temperature of most hot-water heaters has been reduced to 120[degrees] to save energy and prevent scalding--perfect conditions...

...theme from Miami Vice was a No. 1 hit and the rising star known as Prince still had a name that didn't look like a typo. The year was 1985, and although shipments of recorded music were down 4%, the worst the industry had to worry about--hair spray and tight pants aside--was that some listeners liked to mix their own cassette tapes with favorite tunes from the latest Phil Collins or Duran Duran albums. Record companies dealt with this casual piracy by printing a skull and crossbones on the backs of tapes along with the claim that...
