Last week at Annapolis for the Eastern sprint regatta, McMillin got another chance to change M.I.T.'s status. With 34 eight-oared shells from 13 colleges competing, spectators saw the biggest flotilla ever assembled for a crew regatta in the U.S. But for McMillin there was only one other shell on the Severn River: undefeated Harvard, which had lost only nine varsity races since 1937, had already beaten M.I.T. twice this year...
...Elis out stroked Harvard throughout the whole of last week's race, and still had the power left for a final sprint. Since then Haines has been concentrating on developing a stronger finish for his varsity, which has been the smoothest looking boat on the Charles all year, but still seems to lack the final punch. In an effort to find more power he has juggled the varsity eight in practices, but has finally decided on the same boastings as last week...
...fits into the schedule well, coming only two weeks after the Yale race. The crew has not gone to Henley since 1939 because the race was scheduled so late. The early date enables the varsity to go directly to England and begin training for the shorter sprint distance of the Henley course, after rowing the four-mile course against Yale...
This year's varsity has turned in very fast speeds in the sprint time trials, and should have a good chance for victory in July, even after training for June's four-mile race...
