During the spring and summer whoop-ing-cough season of 1935 Miller-main-tained chimpanzees "Herbert H," "Becky," "Darby," "Joan" & friends were infected with sputum from the throats of whooping Baltimore children. Evidence indicated that the whooping-cough germ requires a virus to lead the way into the air passages before the disease breaks out. That virus seemed to be the same virus implicated in the common cold...
...wise travelers fortify themselves against typhoid, so in future purchasers of parrots, parakeets, lovebirds, macaws, may guard against psittacosis (parrot fever). At Yale Medical School last week Dr. Thomas Milton Rivers of Manhattan's Rockefeller Institute announced development of a psittacosis vaccine, prepared from the sputum of recovered psittacosis patients. White mice, monkeys and finally seven of Dr. Rivers' laboratory assistants were vaccinated, proved immune to the disease...
...potato was more significant than the money. After biologists had fooled around with the tuberculosis bacillus for almost 50 years, they had developed two standard methods of discovering the bacilli in sputum. One was to stain a smear with dyes and search for the germs with a microscope. That was crude and inaccurate. The other was to inject suspected sputum into guinea pigs, creatures unusually susceptible to tuberculosis. That was slow and expensive. A quicker, surer method of diagnosis was needed...
...National Jewish Hospital has as director of its research laboratory Harry John Corper, Chicago-born pathologist. He has as co-worker Nao Uyei, U. S.-educated Japanese organic chemist. The two pottered around with sputum, acids, dyes and mediums on which bacteria grow. And eventually they found that sulphuric or hydrochloric acid would best dissolve the elements of the sputum undesirable in isolating the tuberculosis bacteria, that crystal violet dye best brought out the shape of the germs, that they flourished best on a chunk of potato. Now practically every tuberculosis hunter uses their test...
...Tuesday, April 24, Colonel Charles Augustus Lindbergh flew to Quebec, carrying twelve bottles of anti-pneumonia serum and three white mice, and accompanied by Thomas B. Applegate, private secretary to Mr. Rockefeller. Immediately on his arrival that evening the white mice were inoculated with Floyd Bennett's sputum. Just before midnight the results of the inoculation were published. The bulletin read: "The type of pneumonia from which Bennett is suffering has been disclosed by the inoculation of mice as type III." A simple statement, but it meant the sera were useless, the flight was in vain, the breaks were...
