...geological cord joining North and South America, is a one-crop country-coffee forming about 95% of her exports. Since 1935, with the coffee market glutted, she has disposed of her crop largely by barter with Germany, getting textiles, hardware in return. Last week the 13,173-sq. mi. nation, the size of New Jersey and Connecticut, decided she needed airplanes for training purposes, for ferrying army freight over her mountains and for remote control over rebel bands in the interior. There appeared to be no better way to get them than by a swap of her coffee. To Italy...
...Langmuir, having studied ballistics formulae, showed that if the botfly flew at 800 m.p.h. the wind pressure against its head would be 8 Ib. per sq. in., "probably enough to crush the fly." The power needed to maintain such a velocity would be 370 watts or about one-half horsepower -which is, as Dr. Langmuir exclaims, "a good deal for a fly!" Also, the fuel requirement would be so high that the insect would have to consume more than its own weight of food every second...
Hottest city in the world is reputedly the Persian Gulf port of Muscat, capital of the arid little (82,000 sq. mi.) independent Sultanate of Oman, where the average rainfall is only 3½ in. a year. In addition to reciprocal, most-favored-nation treatment of imports & exports, it provided that U. S. citizens rescued from ships wrecked on Oman's rocky coast must be entertained at the Sultan's expense. When he departed...
Last week Toledo's Buckeye Paint & Varnish Co. was going ahead with plans to manufacture and market Iceolite, at a price of $2.50 per sq. ft. A rink 100 ft. by 50 would thus cost $12,500, but would last a long time. Scratches and shavings cut by skate blades could be melted back smoothly into the rink's surface with flat irons (see cut). The irons would also be used to meld the cracks between the blocks after they are laid down. Liquid Iceolite is poured into molds, congeals into blocks...
