...promised Nehru solemnly that he would never dream of such a dreadful thing, proceeded forthwith to violate a frontier. The Communist Pathet Lao regime, which had grabbed some 13,000 sq. mi. of northern Laos in flagrant violation of the Geneva cease-fire agreements, began as a Viet Minh appendage. In the past year Ho's agents have built it up into a tightly disciplined Communist state, complete with full-dress government ministries, a capital at Samneua, brainwashing squads and a conscripted army of 10,000 men trained, supplied, and controlled by 1.500 or more regular Viet Minh troops...
...heart of the populous Ganges valley, 10,000 villages crumbled and vanished, and farmers shared tree trunks with cobras in the worst floods since 1871. In the coastal state of Orissa, eight rivers thundered simultaneously into spate, killing at least 150, inundating 3,500 sq. mi. of drought-seared cropland. The state's 138 legislators dropped everything and rushed homeward to find out their families' fate...
Porkkala is a 150-sq.-mi. enclave just southwest of Helsinki that Finland was forced to "lease" to the Soviets at the time of the 1944 armistice. There, behind a secrecy no Finn was allowed to penetrate, the Russians destroyed the homes of nearly 8,000 Finns and installed coast guns, jets and some 20,000 troops. Later they allowed trains to cross the peninsula, so long as steel shutters were drawn over windows. Heavy explosions in the area shook windows in Helsinki several times a week until recently. One night last week explosions were heard briefly again...
...probably the nearest thing to a prototype of the new generation of prefab models. It is a single-story, brick-wood-steel building, low and rambling, composed of four self-contained, two-classroom units connected by an enclosed corridor of glazed glass (unnecessary in warm areas). Each 2,700-sq. ft. unit has its own twin washrooms, project area, heating plant, storage space and drinking fountains. The units can be used individually or added to as required, can be dismantled and moved to follow shifting populations. With such models, communities will be able to build for their current needs...
...Motors, whose car-studded Motoramas have become one of the brightest offerings in auto showmanship, decided last February to bring belated glamour to the plain-Jane diesel engine. Beside Soldier Field on Chicago's lake front, the company strung out eight miles of electrical conduits, laid 500,000 sq. ft. of reinforced paving, built a permanent, 204-ft.-long bridge over busy Lake Shore Drive. This week General Motors was ready to raise the curtain on "Powerama," a $7,000,000, 26-day, seven-day-a-week diesel opera...
