Many, in fact, fail to get ahead in any way. In Westminster, the "Little Saigon" in Southern California's Orange County, 140,000 Vietnamese refugees are crammed into 5 sq. mi. often under deeply impoverished circumstances. Without the resources and planning that other Asian families have used in resettling, many of them work at dead-end jobs or, as a last resort, subsist on government handouts, which profoundly shames them. Says Nghia Tran, 30, executive director of the Vietnamese Community of Orange County: "As refugees, this population represents a special set of needs, and sometimes they are not met. This...

...toughest job may be replacing the solar panels -- two 40-ft.-long "wings" that provide power to the telescope. During the full day needed for this task, Thornton and Akers will precisely follow hundreds of steps, using bolts, electrical connectors, Velcro and 84 sq. yds. of plastic. In the 70's she was so bad, they say, that she would sing the three or four songs in her repertoire, then apologize, then repeat. Since Cindy, a few big-time bands have played at Toad's. The Rolling...

President Clinton visited Wooster Sq. last month for dinner after receiving an honorary degree at Yale Law. New Haven's two most-famous brick-over pizza parlors, Sally's and Pepe's, are within a block of each other on Wooster Street. Don't miss the Italian pastry shops nearby...
