Bill Kastner of the U.S. Geological Survey office in Denver monitors the monstrous Ogallala Aquifer, that famous underground sponge that reaches from South Dakota to the high plains of Texas, touches eight states and embraces 174,000 sq. mi. In some places the water level has fallen 200 ft., leaving the balance between use and recharge from rainfall in precarious condition. Given a little hot dry weather and good farm prices that encourage increased grain planting, the irrigation pumps will begin to whir, in all likelihood sucking up more water than will be replaced...
Williams has caught on because he offers catchy solutions to complicated problems, with a rustic sincerity that Texans seem to relish. A fourth- generation Texan, he personally leads roundups and spring brandings of the 900 Brangus cattle on his 43-sq.-mi. Happy Cove Ranch in the Big Bend country. He concedes that he once decked a disgruntled ex-employee, explaining, "There are times when you don't call a lawyer." Observes Austin political consultant George Christian: "He typifies what a lot of people think Texas ought...
...land of exceptional beauty and diversity. A 1,000-mile coastline arcs southward from the limestone cliffs of Musandam to the powdery beaches of Salalah, a major trading town in the monsoon-brushed province of Dhofar. Southwest of the former slave-trading port of Sur lies a 5,000-sq.-mi. sea of sand whose dune ridges rise as high as 350 ft. above the Wahiba desert floor. To the north, the Jebel Akhdar (Green Mountain) anchors the Hajar range. Mud-brick houses cling to its steep slopes, and fortresses whose foundations precede the age of Islam guard entry...
...future metropolis was still an insignificant place. On the death in 1263 of Alexander Nevsky, who had defended Novgorod from the attacking Swedes and Teutonic Knights, the division of his lands gave the 500-sq.-mi. principality of Moscow to his youngest son Daniel. This son and his successors began buying and occasionally seizing more land, and unlike most Russian princes, they used primogeniture to preserve what they acquired. Ivan I, who became Grand Prince of Moscow in 1328, increased his territory fivefold, and the Metropolitan of the Russian Orthodox Church moved his headquarters there...
Despite assurances that the insecticide poses no threat to humans, many people object to the state's program of spraying malathion from helicopters over a 400-sq.-mi. area that includes Los Angeles and Orange counties. Last week Pasadena passed an ordinance that effectively outlaws spraying within city limits by prohibiting aircraft from flying at altitudes of less than 700 ft. Despite the objections, Governor George Deukmejian plans to continue the spraying. Pasadena is considering filing misdemeanor charges against the pilots involved in the anti-medfly mission...
