...perches like a nervous hummingbird on the long southeastern rim of Communist China - 61 sq. mi. of uneasy Portuguese suzerainty in a teeming, tumultuous Asian world. This is fabled Macao, a sleepy city of sin, smuggling and games of chance, which, like nearby Hong Kong, is tolerated by Peking mainly as a handy source of hard currency. Thus its 300,000 people live in the knowledge that they might at any time be engulfed by their giant neighbor. "When China breathes," goes one old Macao saying, "we tremble." Last week marked the 19th anniversary of the United Nations' partition of Palestine, which awarded Europe's displaced Jews 8,000 sq. mi. of land to form the new state of Israel and sent 1,300,000 Palestinian refugees drifting into neighboring Arab countries. The bitterness engendered by that partition seems to have deepened rather than dissipated over the years, and Israel's raid on the Jordanian frontier village of Samu (TIME, Nov. 25) has fired it to the danger point. ...spotted streams of cool, fresh rain water flowing out into the ocean. After completing the volcanic survey, the B-25 flew back and forth over Hawaii's entire coastline, eventually detecting a total of 219 shore areas that might have underground fresh-water springs. In one 5-sq.-mi. area in Hilo Bay, the scientists estimate, the discharge of fresh water amounts to 100 million gallons a day. Using the infra-red data, the U.S. Geological Survey has just published an atlas of Hawaii's coastal areas pinpointing the location of the underground fresh-water flows. The maps...
