...lush, futuristic world of Final Fantasy VIII, the latest installment of the blockbuster PlayStation series that has sold some 22 million copies worldwide. Gorgeous scenery with cinematic touches and realistic-looking characters make this epic tale of good vs. evil dazzle onscreen. Players take on the role of Squall, a military-academy student who must stop an evil sorceress from controlling the world. Along the way he battles monsters, solves puzzles and falls in love. The story line may sound familiar, but its stunning rendition is fresh...

...charged with making men out of them in White Squall is Christopher Sheldon (Jeff Bridges), skipper of the Albatross, a sailing ship he has turned into a floating secondary school. He's the sort of father figure these chinless wonders have never had--stern but caring, and at one with the winds and the waves. Also, he seems to have the ability to tell them apart, a matter on which Todd Robinson's script--not to mention the casting director--is not very helpful. The play, "Female Transport" by Steve Gooch, was directed by Jason Southerland, the Institute for Advanced Training's first year directing student, and showed some artistic potential, but was doomed to failure by its subject matter. Luckily, both productions were chock full of pleasant visuals for those who enjoy the sight of cute boys...

While "Female Transport" was grating, "White Squall," another true story, this one about the fateful 1960 voyage of the school ship Albatross, is manipulative. Through annoying direction and a terrible script, you are forced to care about all of the characters, setting up an emotional windfall after several of them drown. However, if you're too busy laughing at lines like, "Do you know what's out there? Some wind and rain and some damn big waves," you'll hardly have time...

...comes into big money from the estate of his as-rich-as-he-was-weird great-granddad Jean Paul Getty. But he has scored something: his first adult role. Having fully explored the shipwrecked-child genre in his first movie, Lord of the Flies, and the newly opened White Squall, Getty's the romantic lead in Lost Highway, the David Lynch movie being filmed in Death Valley. "It's a twisted love story between me and Patricia Arquette," says Getty. "It's got sex, love, murder--all the good stuff." When not making movies, Getty produces rap records and plays...
