Spots and Peaks. Since Chateaubriand, like his country, was a latecomer to art collecting, the classical, medieval and Renaissance periods are only spottily-though sometimes handsomely-represented. There are two Titians, a Raphael Resurrection of Christ, a Mantegna St. Jerome, a commanding Velásquez portrait. There are also some diverting minor works, such as Quentin Metsys' Contract of Marriage, a droll example of genre by a Flemish contemporary of Erasmus, showing a young man dutifully snuggling up to an ugly but rich old wife...
...relish for the Spanish flavor of their past. To their delight, this year the sentiment is being reciprocated by the loan to San Antonio's HemisFair of 13 masterpieces from Spain. The heavily guarded collection, estimated to be worth $10 million, includes outstanding works by Goya, Velásquez, Murillo, Zurbaran and El Greco (see color pages). It not only represents the pick of the Prado, but also includes paintings from other Spanish museums. The exhibit is designed to tie in with the fair's theme, "The Confluence of Civilizations," by demonstrating that Spanish culture is itself...
...envision a large collection," explains S.M.U. Director William Jordan, "but rather one of the best." S.M.U. has already acquired some fine Goya engravings, a distinguished Velásquez portrait; other works by artists ranging from Zurbaran to Miró. The loveliest of the lot is Murillo's landscape showing Jacob with Laban's flocks (see color overleaf). As the tale is related in Genesis, Laban, who owned the sheep, told Jacob he would be paid for tending them with any lambs born spotted or speckled, and Jacob's method of inducing speckled progeny was to lay peeled...
Both DeBakey and Kantrowitz have obtained good results with half-hearts in one or two cases. DeBakey's best patient, Mrs. Esperanza del Valle Vásquez, was on heart assist for ten days after the implantation of two artificial valves in her heart. Now she puts in an eight-hour day on her feet, running her Mexico City beauty parlor. On hearing about Washkansky last week, she burbled...
Flawless Flair. Director Lee, who joined the museum in 1952 as curator of Oriental art and took over the reins from Milliken in 1958, uses subtler but equally effective tactics. When a Velásquez portrayal of a court jester turned up for auction in London last year, gossips cast doubt on its authenticity, reserving their admiration for Rembrandt's Titus. Lee arranged to have the Velasquez secretly Xrayed, jetted to Madrid to compare it with other works by the Spanish master. When the hammer went down, Titus sold for $2.2 million; Lee walked away with a rare early...
