...Less polished and more popular with the older crowd is Guan Hoe Soo at 214 Joo Chiat Road, tel: (65) 6344 2761, one of Singapore's signature Peranakan restaurants fusing Malaysian, Indonesian and Chinese cuisine. It's been serving fish-head curry and sotong, or squid, sambal since 1953. Even Lee Kuan Yew is rumored to order takeout from here. With dishes like these on Singapore's menu, eating for two has never been so easy...

...It’s irresistible and impossible to stop eating. Laap, a special that often appears on the ever-changing specials board, is similar in taste, but here the beef is minced, not sliced, and saw-tooth herb, whose taste resembles that of the more familiar cilantro, is added. Squid Salad is also quite refreshing, a Cambodian version of ceviche, in which barely cooked pieces of seafood are scored and mixed with onions, peanuts, green chiles and whole sprigs of herbs. Cambodian Pad Thai seems like a misnomer and in fact bears no resemblance to the fried dish found...

...When the pair finally shows up, two hours late and suitably soused, it's like all the energy of his glory days has been jolted back into Gazza. He hugs each man twice and offers up snacks of spicy squid, dried beef and shrimp chips.
