This work stimulated a lot of excitement among geologists. They speculated that stress along the San Andreas could be relieved by pumping water deep into the fault, allowing the Pacific and North American plates to squish by each other gradually, without lurching. The numbers, however, were not on their side. Lubricating the entire fault would require enormous amounts of drilling, flooding and pumping.
