...dauntless of the Fauves - the Wild Beasts - a small group of painters who pushed the telegraphic brushwork of Impressionism and the dissonant palette of post-Impressionism into fever territory. At their head was Matisse, King of the Beasts, building pictures out of colliding zones of pyrotechnic color or from staccato dashes of magenta and ultramarine...

Similarly, fifth track “Alpha Shallows” represents a new level of passion in Marling’s repertoire. The song begins tamely enough: at first, only a soft, yet urgent acoustic guitar and quiet, staccato strings support Marling’s voice as she sings such characteristically poetic lyrics as “And his heart was full of fire at the man he had become / And his soul was seldom higher with the falsities of fun.” But the song gradually intensifies, boasting, at its climax, full choral accompaniment, deep, forceful piano chords...

Distorted guitars and synthesizers howl like frigid winds through the track, slicing Adu’s distant...

...takes a more existential approach to love lost. “When I’m older, start to wonder, was that love or instinct working? / Have I even felt it ever?” Daniel asks on one vocal track, while its counterpart screams over staccato guitar chords...
